HISTORY
It started in 1986, with a collection of scenes performed under the auspice of a class taught by famed Meisner technique teacher Edward Kaye-Martin at the Night Flight Theatre.
Twenty-three years and countless awards later, the Alliance Repertory Company continues to present a unique brand of theater to patrons, with atmospheric staging, new and provocative plays and some of the top acting talent on display in Los Angeles theater.
The Alliance has produced over 42 plays in those 23 years, mixing the work of brand new playwrights with the works of established writers. Plays by world-famous authors such as Sam Shepard (Seduced, 2001), Clifford Odets (The Big Knife, 1993) and Tennessee Williams (27 Wagons Full of Cotton, 1990) were produced in the Alliance’s intimate 46-seat space on Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank, along with world premieres such as Sarah Bewley’s Power in the Blood (2005), Mel DeMind’s Big Headed Women (2000), Hal Cantor’s Cubicles (nominated for several LA Weekly awards, 2006) and Michael T. Folie’s long-running The Adjustment (1995). We were also fortunate enough to be a part of the largest collaborative theater event in history with Suzan-Lori Parks’ 365 Days/365 Plays.
On February 28, 2007 - after 19 years of producing at 3204 West Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank - the Alliance Repertory Company received an eviction notice from the new property owners. In these time of rent increases and lowering appreciation of the arts, our situation is, sadly, far from unique. Many theaters throughout Los Angeles have faced such problems and their successful reincarnations inspired us to continue on, no matter how difficult.
After a little more than two years hunting for the right opportunity and producing nomadically, the Alliance Repertory Company is proud to announce its new home at the Andrew Benne Studios, 4930 Lankershim Boulevard in the NoHo Arts District. As fate would have it, Andrew was one of Edward Kaye-Martin’s students when the Alliance was born, lo those 23 years ago. With his help, we have rebuilt the company, its Board of Directors and have expanded our artistic vision to include the New River Dramatists, an incubator for the emerging new works of such incredible playwrights as M.Z. Ribalow, James McLure, Cassandra Madley, Jack Heiffner, Steven Fecheter, and Lee Blessing to name just a few. We are delighted that we have access to their new plays and are able to bring them to the fore of the Los Angeles theater community.
As we move forward in our new space and with our new partners, it will take the effort and dedication of our incredible Alliance members, as well as our friends and patrons to ensure that we are able to bring you the kind of artistic integrity the Alliance has been proud to maintain. Thank you for all you’ve done in the past. It is my hope that we can count on you for our future.
- Royana Black, Artistic Director
